Colorful to bring back some DDR3 motherboards in May

Colorful may restock DDR3 motherboards, limited H81 supply expected in early May

Colorful could soon restock older DDR3-based motherboards, according to a post published by Channel Gate. The update says Colorful’s motherboard factory is currently out of D3 boards, with supply effectively cut off. The shortage is said to be affecting business.

The post claims Colorful is planning to re-procure D3 motherboards to ease the current supply pressure. Shipments are expected to arrive soon, although no exact date was shared. It also says the company may consider limited H81 output around early May.

That would mark a return of a platform based on Intel’s H81 chipset, which launched in 2013 for the LGA1150 socket . H81 supports fourth-generation Intel Core processors and DDR3 memory, so any renewed supply would target older desktop systems rather than current mainstream builds.

Not a big return of DDR3

It’s pretty clear that this is not a major return of DDR3 memory to the market. The wording suggests this is more of a small restock than a broader return of legacy platforms. Supply is expected to be limited, especially for H81 models, so availability may depend on regional channel demand and whatever inventory Colorful can secure.

I think this is mainly targeted for companies that are in dire need of an upgrade, but have limited resources to upgrade to more expensive DDR4/DDR5 platforms. Still, it is unusual to see renewed activity around DDR3-era boards in 2026, but demand for older replacement parts still exists in some markets.
