MSI RTX 4090 connector reportedly melts, cat becomes the real system monitor

A new burned GeForce RTX 4090 case has appeared on Taiwan’s PTT forums. The owner says his cat started meowing while he was on a toilet, which led him to notice smoke and the smell of burning plastic coming from the PC.
According to the post, the card is an MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming Trio purchased in October 2022. The user says the system was using an FSP HPT2-1000M power supply with a direct cable connection rather than an adapter. He also says the cable was regularly checked, properly seated, and not sharply bent.

The owner adds that the PC was still running when he noticed the smoke, but it would not shut down normally, so he unplugged the system from the wall. Photos attached to the post show visible damage around the GPU-side power connector, while the PSU-side connector reportedly did not melt, although the cable itself appears darkened. The user says the cable could not be removed after the failure.

He has already filed for RMA service and says he is waiting for pickup documents. Hardware monitoring software did not save the card, the power button did not help much, but the cat apparently did its job on time. MSI recently introduced a new PSU safety feature called Power Safeguard. After this story, Catguard may be something other GPU vendors may start promoting a bit more. And yes, it’s teh actual cat in teh main image.
