OpenNOW brings an open-source desktop client to GeForce NOW users

Let’s hope NVIDIA sees no problem with this tool

A GitHub project called OpenNOW is building an open-source desktop client for GeForce NOW. The software is described as an independent community project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NVIDIA. According to the project page, users still need their own GeForce NOW account, but OpenNOW aims to provide an alternative front end for accessing the service.

No telemetry and fewer limits

The repository describes OpenNOW as a desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux, built with Electron, React, and TypeScript. Its listed features include game browsing, library-aware session handling, stream controls for resolution, codec, FPS, aspect ratio, and region, plus an in-stream diagnostics overlay. The developers also say the project follows a zero-telemetry direction, with settings stored locally.

One of the talking points around the project is that it appears to remove some limitations found in the official client, including inactivity handling. The project also adds features such as screenshots, recording, microphone controls, and controller-friendly navigation.

The bigger question is whether NVIDIA will tolerate a third-party GeForce NOW client in the long term. OpenNOW does not claim any official partnership. Hopefully NVIDIA does not see this as an issue.
