SK hynix begins OEM supply of 321-layer QLC SSDs
© SK hynix SK hynix has started shipping a new client SSD called PQC21, built with its 321-layer QLC NAND . What’s interesting about this annoucement is that this is storage if finally meant for laptops and desktops, not servers, and SK hynix says this is its first product using this specific 321-layer QLC memory.
The drive will be offered in 1TB and 2TB capacities. SK hynix says the goal is to deliver more storage in the same physical space while also keeping power use low, which is useful for thin laptops and other compact PCs.
The key change here is the move to 321-layer QLC NAND. QLC stores four bits of data per cell, which lets manufacturers fit more capacity into a chip than TLC or older types of NAND. The tradeoff with QLC is that raw write performance is usually lower, so vendors often rely on caching to keep everyday performance responsive.
© SK hynix SK hynix says PQC21 uses SLC caching to speed up common read and write tasks. That means part of the drive temporarily behaves like faster SLC memory, which helps with short bursts of activity such as app installs, file transfers, and updates.
The company has already started supplying the new SSD to Dell Technologies in April 2026 . That suggests these drives will appear first in OEM systems rather than as a retail SSD launch.
