AMD Zen3, Zen4 and Zen5 X3D CPUs compared

Hardware Unboxed has published a 12-game average comparing all mainstream Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 X3D processors, tested with an RTX 5090 at 1080p. This review appears just shortly before AMD is set to launch its first consumer dual 3D V-Cache variant. I believe this review features data that will likely be used for the upcoming coverage of AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 .
Gap between AMD’s best and worst X3D CPUs
At 1080p Medium, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D leads with 266 FPS average and 199 FPS 1% low. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D follows at 257 FPS, while the Ryzen 7 7800X3D reaches 233 FPS. The lowest result comes from the Ryzen 5 5500X3D at 162 FPS, creating a gap of roughly 64% between the fastest and slowest CPUs.
Do note that since Ryzen 5000X3D is AM4-compatible, it is using a different platform with DDR4-3200 memory instead of the 7000/9000 DDR5-6000 spec.
© HardwareUnboxed At 1080p Ultra, results compress due to increased GPU load. The 9850X3D still leads at 203 FPS, followed by the 9800X3D at 196 FPS and the 7800X3D at 181 FPS. The 5500X3D drops to 132 FPS, r educing the total spread to about 54%.
The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is around 20–24% faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D adds another 8–10%. Zen 5 X3D parts extend this lead further, maintaining top results in both average frame rate and 1% lows .
© HardwareUnboxed Core count differences between 6-core and 8-core models remain limited. The Ryzen 5 7600X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D differ by around 6–10%, indicating that IPC and memory improvements are more relevant for gaming performance than additional cores.
The review did not include any 12 or 16-core SKUs that feature X3D technology. Hopefully that data will be included in the upcoming review. AMD isn’t really marketing its upcoming 9950X3D2 for gaming, but let’s be honest, that’s the first thing most enthusiasts will use for comparisons.
