Linux 7.0 released with better swapping, and new hardware support

Linux kernel 7.0 is now out. The move to version 7.0 does not mean this is some special feature-packed release. It is mostly a numbering change after the long 6.x cycle. The actual update is what you would expect from a new kernel release, filesystem work, performance tuning, and new hardware support.

One of the bigger changes is on the storage side. Linux kernel 7.0 improves how the system reports file and filesystem errors, which should help with diagnostics and recovery. Phoronix notes that XFS (which is a file system) also gets better health monitoring, with support for reporting issues in real time and working with repair tools.

There are also a few smaller core changes aimed at everyday use. Linux kernel 7.0 continues work on memory swapping, which can help performance under heavy memory pressure. It also brings networking updates and some under-the-hood improvements for containers, along with extra developer tools and security controls.

On the hardware side, Linux kernel 7.0 adds more support for upcoming Intel platforms, including Nova Lake , and expands graphics support for newer AMD and Intel GPU technologies. The release also includes new keyboard input codes linked to upcoming AI-related laptop keys.

This is not a kernel release built around one big feature. It is a broad update with useful storage changes, more platform enablement, and a lot of low-level work that will show up over time in future laptops, desktops, and Linux distributions.
