Panasonic TOUGHBOOK FZ-40E with Intel Core Ultra 5 can survive drops from 180 cm

Panasonic launches TOUGHBOOK FZ-56 and FZ-40 rugged notebooks for field use

Panasonic Connect has announced two new 14-inch TOUGHBOOK models in Japan, the FZ-56 and FZ-40. The company says the FZ-40 will go on sale from April 2026, while the FZ-56 will follow in June 2026. Panasonic positions the FZ-56 as the larger-screen, lighter field model, while the FZ-40 is aimed at jobs where downtime is less acceptable.

The official release focuses on ruggedness, battery life, and modular expansion. Panasonic says the FZ-56 is rated for 90 cm drops, IP53 dust and splash resistance, and operation from -10°C to 50°C. The FZ-40 moves higher with 180 cm drop resistance, IP66 protection, and the same -10°C to 50°C operating range. Panasonic also says the FZ-56 is available with a discrete GPU option, with that version planned for summer 2026.

Panasonic rates the FZ-56 for about 13.5 hours of video playback on the standard battery, or up to 27 hours with an optional second battery installed (the module page shows up to two such expansions modules). The FZ-40 is rated for about 13 hours on the standard battery, or up to 26 hours with the second pack. Both models support hot swap battery replacement when configured with two batteries.

Panasonic also highlights modularity. The FZ-56 has three expansion areas, while the FZ-40 has four. The company says these can be used for interfaces such as 2.5G LAN, DVD drives, serial ports, and smart card readers, depending on model and configuration. The official release also mentions glove support, automatic input mode switching, and bright 14-inch displays rated at around 1,000 cd/m² on the FZ-56 and 1,200 cd/m² on the FZ-40.

The Panasonic press release only mentions the Core Ultra 2 series, but the GDM report claims it’s a Core Ultra 5 235H processor, 16GB memory, and a 512GB SSD as the main specification. GDM also says the systems support Wi-Fi 7, with optional 5G and LTE models, and that buyers can configure ports such as serial, smart card, D-Sub, and wired LAN to fit field requirements.
