Samsung issues statement after counterfeit 990 Pro SSDs reach Europe
© PC Watch Samsung has responded to reports of counterfeit 990 Pro SSDs reaching Europe. In a statement shared with ComputerBase, the company said it takes reports about fake memory products seriously and is taking action against their distribution.
The company also told buyers to purchase Samsung storage only through its online store or authorized retailers. Samsung added that users can check whether a drive is genuine through Samsung Magician , which can identify products that do not come from Samsung.
Samsung takes such reports about counterfeit memory products very seriously. We are taking consistent action against the distribution of such counterfeits.
We recommend purchasing Samsung storage media exclusively through the Samsung Online Shop or authorized retailers. Consumers can also use the Samsung Magician software to verify that their product is genuine.
We are grateful for information from the market and consumers to quickly identify and investigate any cases. Users and partners can contact Samsung Product Service if they suspect a problem.

The statement follows a case reported by ComputerBase, where a reader in Europe received two fake Samsung 990 Pro SSDs with packaging that looked close to the original. Once opened, the drives were easy to spot because they used a blue PCB instead of the black board found on genuine 990 Pro models. ComputerBase says those drives could not even be formatted.

As mentioned, this is not the first time fake 990 Pro drives have appeared. We previously covered another case where a counterfeit Samsung 990 Pro looked convincing enough to pass some basic checks, but failed in real-world use. Those drives can be purchased in Japan and Europe. At least the European fakes are easier to spot due to their blue color.
