GIGABYTE also wants to protect 12V-2×6 GPUs from burning with T-Guard

GIGABYTE follows MSI and ASUS with T-Guard PSU safety feature

Someone remind us how we even got to the point this is needed.

GIGABYTE has announced T-Guard, a new protection feature built into select Gaming Series power supplies. According to the company, the feature adds a temperature sensor inside the 12V-2×6 GPU power cable , monitors the connector in real time, and reacts by lowering discrete GPU power draw instead of shutting down the whole system. GIGABYTE says the rest of the PC can remain on, which gives users time to save work and shut down safely. The company lists the Gaming 1000GM PG5, 850GM PG5, and 750GM PG5 among the supported models.

Why is this even needed? Because this has clearly become an industry-wide issue. GIGABYTE itself says incomplete insertion, sharp bends near the plug, third-party adapters, and long-term thermal fatigue can all create hot spots at the connector. That is the same area where high-end GPUs now push up to 600W through a single 16-pin cable, so PSU vendors are no longer treating connector safety as a one-off concern.

Exclusive T-Guard Technology: A Triple Line of Defense

As graphics card performance and power consumption continue to rise, the stability of power connectors is critical to system safety. The T-Guard technology in the GAMING series utilizes precision thermistors within the 12V-2×6 connector to evolve from passive protection to active monitoring:

  • Detect (Real-time Sensing): Built-in sensors monitor connector temperatures in real-time, triggering immediate alerts if signs of overheating from loose cables or abnormal loads are detected.
  • Protect (Isolation Protection): Upon detecting dangerous temperatures, T-Guard intelligently reduces power specifically to the GPU to prevent connector burnout. Meanwhile, other system components remain operational, preventing sudden power loss that could damage hard drives.
  • Reconnect (Data Recovery): Users can utilize the processor’s integrated graphics (if available) to view the display and save their work before shutting down for inspection.

ASRock, MSI and ASUS already have their own 12V-2×6 protection systems

T-Guard is not arriving in a vacuum. MSI already introduced GPU Safeguard+ on its MPG Ai TS series, with real-time per-pin current tracking, alerts, and GPU throttling through MSI Afterburner instead of a full system crash. ASUS went a different route with ROG Equalizer , an etched 12V-2×6 cable that it says improves current balance, raises wire load capacity from 9.2A to 17A, and kept cable temperature around 73.4°C in its own extreme test, versus 146°C for a standard cable.

Partly, for dual-layer monitoring mode

GIGABYTE’s places the thermal sensor directly in the cable and keeps the protection logic inside the PSU, with no software required . This is similar to ASRock cable protection . MSI relies on software alerts and PSU-to-GPU communication, while ASUS focuses on cable design and its upcoming GPU Tweak III integration. Different implementation, same direction. Vendors now want to detect abnormal connector behavior early and reduce the chance of cable or socket damage before it turns into a dead card or a melted plug.

Corsair also working on similar feature

Corsair’s Jonny “Guru” Gerow said the company plans next-generation PSUs with 12V-2×6 “per-pin monitoring,” although no launch window or product names were shared.

Taken together, MSI, ASUS, GIGABYTE and reportedly Corsair are all moving toward connector-level monitoring or balancing. That alone says enough about how seriously PSU vendors now view the 12V-2×6 ‘problem’.
