Metro 2039 revealed, new voiced protagonist leads return to Moscow tunnels

4A Games and Deep Silver have officially announced Metro 2039, the next mainline entry in the Metro series. The game is coming this winter to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC.
The new game takes the series back to the Moscow Metro after Metro Exodus moved outside the tunnels. 4A says Metro 2039 is built around a new original story written in collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky, rather than a direct adaptation of one of his books.

This time players take control of a new protagonist called The Stranger. According to 4A, he is the first fully voiced lead character in a mainline Metro game. The story is set in a Metro now controlled by the Novoreich, a dictatorship led by Hunter, while the reveal material points to a darker and more overtly political direction than past entries.
4A also shared a first look at gameplay. The footage showed exploration, stealth, close-quarters combat, weapon malfunctions, and the return of Nosalises inside ruined stations and tunnel settlements. The studio says environmental storytelling remains a core part of the design, with what it calls “frozen stories” built into each area.
On the technical side, Metro 2039 is once again built on 4A’s in-house engine . The studio says it has rebuilt its ray tracing implementation for a more tuned and performant result, while continuing to push visuals on current-generation hardware. 4A also said the war in Ukraine reshaped the project’s direction, and that experience is reflected directly in the game’s themes and tone.
