ASRock says new 1×32-bit DDR5 HUDIMM support could lower memory prices on Intel boards

ASRock adds HUDIMM support to Intel DDR5 motherboards

ASRock says its Intel 600, 700, and 800 series motherboards now support a new DDR5 module type that the company calls HUDIMM . The new memory uses a single 32-bit sub-channel instead of the usual two 32-bit sub-channels found on standard DDR5 desktop modules. ASRock also says its DeskMini systems will support the same idea in HSODIMM form.

Regular DDR5 UDIMM modules split the stick into two independent 32-bit sub-channels, which is part of the standard DDR5 design. ASRock’s HUDIMM reduces that to one 32-bit sub-channel, or 1×32-bit. TEAMGROUP , which ASRock named as a partner for the project, says this can cut the number of chips on the module in half, which is the cost-saving angle behind the format.

UDIMM is the regular full-size desktop memory stick. SODIMM is the smaller module used in laptops and compact systems. CUDIMM and CSODIMM are newer DDR5 variants that add an onboard clock driver to improve signal quality at higher speeds, while keeping the same physical slots as standard UDIMM and SODIMM. ASRock also used the name CQDIMM last month for a 4-rank CUDIMM design, and now HUDIMM and HSODIMM for this new one-sub-channel format. So they are covering all bases, the ultra-enthusiast segment and now clearly more budget.

Target – cheaper modules, Intel approves

ASRock says standard DDR5, with its 2×32-bit layout, is better suited to high-capacity single-module designs, while the new 1×32-bit approach is aimed at cheaper modules and entry-level systems. The company also claims mixed memory combinations may help performance in some cases. On its H610M COMBOII board, ASRock says an 8GB 1×32-bit module paired with a 16GB 2×32-bit module delivered more bandwidth than a single 24GB 2×32-bit module. That result came from ASRock’s own example, and the company has not shared a wider set of test data yet.

In ASRock’s release, Intel vice president Robert Hallock said support for lower-cost DDR5 modules can help keep desktop platforms accessible as memory prices rise. ASRock says support is available on its Intel DDR5 motherboard stack through BIOS updates, and that it is working with memory makers to bring more one-sub-channel modules to market.
