NVIDIA has released its RTX Remix Advanced Particle VFX update, expanding the company’s modding toolkit for older PC games with new particle authoring features. The release follows NVIDIA’s GDC 2026 preview and arrives alongside WoodBoy’s playable Quake III Arena RTX demo, which remasters the classic Area 15 NVIDIA Bunker map with path tracing, RTX Remix Logic, DLSS Ray Reconstruction, DLSS Multi Frame Generation, and Reflex.

Even more graphics features for modders

The update builds on the path-traced particle system NVIDIA added earlier, which lets modders replace legacy effects with physically simulated particles that cast shadows and appear in reflections . Advanced Particle VFX adds Dynamic Animations, so creators can adjust particle color, size, transparency, and speed over a particle’s lifetime using curve-based controls. NVIDIA also added Complex Gravitational Effects, directional wind, drag settings, and Randomized Elements to reduce visible repetition in looping effects.

NVIDIA used the new tools to show several examples in the Quake III Arena RTX demo. Teleporters now use animated black hole-style particle waves, while weapon sparks can be pulled into gravity fields and orbit before disappearing. The Lightning Gun also uses randomized strikes and impact effects. NVIDIA says the next major update for the demo is due on April 28 and will add 27 remastered maps, 4,000 materials, new weapons, and 30 player models.

The company also says the new release includes smaller particle sizes, new collision models, and additional burst behaviors, with release notes referring to version 1.4. This follows the January RTX Remix Logic update , which added event-driven visual changes for mods without requiring access to a game’s source code or engine tools.

RTX Remix remains focused on upgrading older DirectX-era PC games with path tracing, asset replacement, and modern NVIDIA features. With this update, NVIDIA is putting more attention on VFX tools rather than just materials and lighting, giving modders more control over how classic games look in motion.
