Steam Controller reportedly set for May 4 release in Japan

Steam Controller price and release date leak thanks to reviewers

Another Steam Controller review appears to have gone live before Valve’s official announcement. This time, the leak comes from 4Gamer, which briefly exposed a review page for Valve’s new controller before hiding it.

The page was already indexed by search engines. The indexed text describes the Steam Controller as a wireless and wired gamepad for Steam-compatible PCs and devices. It also says the controller will launch in Japan on May 4 at 15:00 local time.

Valve’s Steam Controller, a wireless and wired gamepad for Steam-compatible PCs and devices, will be released in Japan on May 4th at 15 hours (3 PM).

This follows another early review leak from TechyTalk, which showed the controller and claimed a $99 launch price . That video was removed, but the pricing was already reported before the 4Gamer page appeared. With both the price and release date now surfacing through separate review leaks, Valve’s announcement appears to be close. I think the official embargo may lift today or this week for sure.

Valve announced the new Steam Controller alongside Steam Machine and Steam Frame in November. The new controller keeps dual trackpads as one of its key features and adds modern controller features such as magnetic TMR/Hall Effect sticks, HD rumble and four back buttons, according to the earlier leak. It is expected to work as a standalone controller, not only as a Steam Machine accessory.

Valve has not confirmed the $99 price or the May 4/May 5 date. For now, the leaked information points to a launch window next week, with Japan possibly getting the controller first or at the same time as other Steam Deck-supported regions.
