Xbox confirms “Project Helix” pricing and availability affected by memory shortages

Microsoft says memory costs will affect Project Helix pricing and availability, but the next Xbox still has no launch timeline

Microsoft is still not ready to share a launch timeline for Project Helix, the next-generation Xbox console. The company has now confirmed that memory costs are part of the planning process for the system’s pricing and availability.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma was asked by Game File whether memory shortages could affect the timeline for Project Helix. She said memory costs “will impact pricing” and “will impact availability.” She also said Xbox is not ready to share a launch timeline because the market remains dynamic.

All of these things are an equation. Memory costs will impact pricing, will impact availability. As we think about being where the world plays, we will take that into consideration. So we’re not ready to share a launch timeline right now. The world’s pretty dynamic. My number one focus, though, is to focus on what’s in our control, build a great console to play great games, including your PC games.

Helix, a PC, and console hybrid

Project Helix was already confirmed by Microsoft as its next-generation first-party Xbox console. The system is being designed to run both Xbox console games and PC games, which is a major change from the older console model. Microsoft also confirmed that the hardware uses a custom AMD SoC co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR.

The company said alpha versions of Project Helix hardware will start going out to developers in 2027. That does not confirm a retail launch date. It only confirms that consumer hardware is still not close to release.

For now, Xbox is only saying that it wants to build a console for Xbox and PC games. The company is not committing to a release window, price, or launch volume. With memory costs affecting both pricing and availability, Project Helix may be one of several next-generation gaming devices shaped by the current memory market.

Who should be blamed for memory shortages? It would be too simple to point at one company, but Microsoft and AMD are equally responsible. Microsoft has spent the past few years pushing Copilot across Windows and its PC strategy. AMD has also shifted much of its public focus toward AI and data center products, while its consumer GPU and console roadmaps have become less important.
