ASUS Z890 and B860 boards can now tune mixed JEDEC DDR5 memory without XMP OC profiles

ASUS AEMP III improves mixed-memory support on Intel Z890 and B860 boards, aimed at memory without XMP

ASUS is making it easier to mix DDR5 memory on its Intel Z890 and B860 motherboards. The company says UEFI BIOS versions 3002 and 3103 improve support for mixed JEDEC DDR5 configurations through ASUS Enhanced Memory Profile, better known as AEMP.

The feature is aimed at standard DDR5 modules that do not include Intel XMP or AMD EXPO profiles. These modules are often sold without heatsinks and are built around JEDEC settings, but ASUS says AEMP II and AEMP III can tune them beyond stock behavior using the motherboard, CPU, and module data.

AEMP I, II and III

AEMP II is used for DDR5 U-DIMMs, while AEMP III is used for DDR5 CU-DIMMs. ASUS also has AEMP (I) which is used by AMD motherboards, but the company has not explained why the updates are only available for Intel boards. ASUS says users still cannot mix U-DIMM and CU-DIMM modules in the same system. The same applies to memory rank, as single-rank and dual-rank modules cannot be mixed for AEMP use.

ASUS demonstrated the feature on an ROG Maximus Z890 Extreme with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K. The test used four different JEDEC modules from Samsung, SK hynix, and Lexar, with capacities of 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, and 24GB. The board tuned the mixed setup from DDR5-4800 to DDR5-5200 and lowered CAS latency from around CL48 to CL36.

The process is handled inside the BIOS through the AI Overclock Tuner menu. ASUS says the AEMP tuning process usually takes around five minutes. DIMM Fit and DIMM Fit Pro remain separate tools for memory kits with Intel XMP profiles, and those tools can take several hours because they run a longer test process with repeated reboots.

ASUS is claiming AEMP can upgrade the memory from 3200/4400 MT/s to 5200/5600. But I’m not sure where one can even buy such a slow memory, do you?
