Noctua: chromax.black fans are not simple color swaps

Noctua has explained why its chromax.black fan variants often launch months after the standard beige and brown versions. According to the company, black versions are not simple recolors and require separate tooling validation for the injection-moulded fan parts.
The explanation focuses on Noctua’s high-end fans using Sterrox LCP impellers. This includes the NF-A12x25, NF-A12x25 G2 and NF-A14x25 G2 series. These fans use tight blade-to-frame clearances of 0.5 mm on 120 mm models and 0.7 mm on 140 mm models.

Noctua says these tolerances are close to the practical limit of injection moulding. Small changes in material behavior can affect blade dimensions and stability. This becomes a problem when the gap between the impeller and frame is measured in tenths of a millimeter.

The company says black pigments behave differently from the beige and brown pigments used in its standard fans. Black versions typically use carbon black pigment. Its smaller particles and higher surface area can affect melt viscosity , heat absorption and crystallisation during moulding.
Because of this, Noctua does not build the tooling for black versions at the same time as the standard models. The company first stabilizes mass production of the beige and brown parts. It then uses those results to tune the tooling and moulding process for the black parts.
The validation process adds more time. Noctua says the black versions must pass the same long-term high-temperature testing as the standard models. This alone adds around six months. If additional mould tuning or repeated validation is required, the delay can extend to 12 months.
Noctua says the NF-A12x25 G2 chromax.black is now close to release, around 10 months after the standard version.
