Xbox mode expands beyond handhelds to Windows 11 PCs

Xbox mode starts rolling out to Windows 11 PCs in select markets

Microsoft is bringing Xbox mode to more Windows 11 systems. The feature is rolling out today in select markets for laptops, desktops and tablets, following its earlier use on Windows gaming handhelds.

The feature was previously known as Xbox Full Screen Experience . We already covered its rollout on handhelds and its later test builds for regular PCs. Microsoft is now using the Xbox mode name for the broader release.

Controller-focused UI for gamers

Xbox mode replaces the standard desktop flow with a full-screen Xbox interface. It is designed for controller navigation and gives users access to recent games, their library and Xbox Game Pass titles. Microsoft says the library can also include installed games from leading PC storefronts.

The mode does not replace Windows. Users can switch between Xbox mode and the Windows 11 desktop when needed. This keeps the normal PC environment available while offering a console-style interface for gaming sessions.

With Xbox mode, you can:

  • Browse and launch games using a controller optimized interface.
  • Jump back and forth between Xbox mode and the Windows 11 desktop whenever you want.
  • Access an aggregated game library, including the full games catalog from Xbox Game Pass, and installed games from leading PC storefronts.

Microsoft says the rollout will be gradual. Some users in supported markets can download the update today, while broader availability in those markets will follow over the next several weeks.

To check for access, users need to open Windows Update and enable “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available.” Once the update is available for a device, Xbox mode can be launched directly from the PC.
