Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming PC guide moves 32GB RAM into safer territory
After participating in the AI bubble, the company now says you should upgrade to 32GB.

Microsoft now lists 16GB RAM as the baseline for Windows 11 gaming PCs, while 32GB is described as the safer upgrade for users who keep more apps open while gaming. The recommendation appears in Microsoft’s Windows Learning Center guide for gaming PCs.
The company says 16GB RAM remains a practical starting point for most players. However, it adds that moving to 32GB helps when Discord, browsers or streaming tools run in the background. Microsoft also says the extra memory gives newer titles more headroom as memory demands continue to rise. In the same checklist, the company lists “at least 16GB of RAM,” with 32GB preferred for multitasking.
16GB RAM is the baseline; 32GB is the “no worries” upgrade
For most players, 16GB RAM is a practical starting point. Moving to 32GB RAM helps if you run Discord, browsers, or streaming tools alongside your games. That extra memory also gives newer titles more breathing room as memory demands continue to rise.
Not just more memory
The same guide also recommends using an SSD for both Windows and active games. Microsoft says HDDs should be reserved for bulk storage, while games and the operating system should be installed on an SSD to improve load times, patch installation and general system responsiveness. To be fair, this recommendation is about 10 years late. Most modern gaming prebuilts already ship with SSDs, and HDDs are usually offered only as secondary storage.
It is also in Microsoft’s interest to see more powerful hardware in Windows systems. The company’s recent focus on Xbox integration adds more services and background features to the platform. The Xbox app itself can also load at startup unless the user disables it (it is disabled on my PC).
16GB and 32GB for games
This does not mean 32GB is required for most games. Windows Latest’s comparison lists 16GB as the recommended memory capacity for Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, God of War Ragnarök, Elden Ring, Death Stranding 2 On the Beach and Diablo IV, while Red Dead Redemption 2, Tales of Arise and Overwatch 2 remain below that level.
However, newer or more demanding PC releases are starting to list 32GB or more for recommended or higher presets, including The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Mafia: The Old Country, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Wuthering Waves, The Thaumaturge, Painkiller, Europa Universalis V and ARK: Survival Ascended. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 goes higher with 64GB listed as its ideal configuration. I will leave that for your own interpretation.
