AMDGPU full HDMI 2.1 implementation under way
AMD’s first public patch series adds HDMI FRL, while a full implementation is expected once the remaining patches and compliance testing are complete.

AMD may finally be close to solving one of the longest-running display limitations on Radeon GPUs under Linux. A prominent AMD Linux developer has said that a full HDMI 2.1 implementation for AMDGPU will be available once the required patches are ready and compliance testing is complete.
The comment follows AMD’s submission of the first HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link patches for the open-source AMDGPU kernel driver. FRL is the transport layer used by HDMI 2.1 to reach higher bandwidth than HDMI 2.0, allowing display modes such as 4K at 120Hz and other high-resolution, high-refresh-rate configurations. Phoronix stresses that this first patch set is not full HDMI 2.1 support. It covers FRL only, while features such as HDMI VRR are not part of the current submission. AMD also says Display Stream Compression is still being tested and will be sent out later.
Full HDMI 2.1 AMD GPU implementation coming
The developer comment on Phoronix forums claims a full implementation will follow once the patches are ready and have completed HDMI compliance testing. This suggests AMD has found a path to publish the remaining HDMI 2.1 work in the open-source driver stack.

Steam Machine may get HDMI 2.1 after all
As we previously reported, Valve’s said that Steam Machine could not expose full HDMI 2.1 functionality because SteamOS relies on open-source AMD GPU driver components. The system supports AMD FreeSync over HDMI, but HDMI VRR was blocked by the same driver and licensing issue. Should AMD fulfill its promise, nothing should prevent Steam Machines from upgrading to, now officially, HDMI 2.1.
