Gigabyte’s RTX 5090 AORUS and Gaming boards may share a power-enable circuit that leaves too little voltage margin. Northwestrepair believes the 100 kΩ pull-up resistor value is too close to the operating threshold, which could make some cards fail as components age.

One resistor can easily take the whole card down

A repair video from Northwestrepair shows a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5090 that failed to post due to a missing NVVDD (main) voltage rail. The card still had other rails present, including MSVD (memory), memory and PEX (PCIe). The fault was traced to the NVVDD enable path, where a 100 kΩ pull-up resistor reportedly left the signal just below the 1.0 V threshold required for the circuit to enable properly.

The technician says the same circuit appears on Gigabyte RTX 5090 AORUS and Gaming models, He replaced the resistor with a lower-value part, raising the enable voltage to around 1.1 V. That restored the missing NVD rail and allowed the card to post.

Gigabyte RTX 5090 Aorus and Gaming both suffer from same problem that will likely affect many gamers as times goes on.

The original resistor value appears to leave almost no tolerance for component aging. In Northwestrepair’s view, the circuit is calculated too close to the minimum threshold, so small changes over time can cause the enable signal to fall below the required voltage.

In other words, the resistor or surrounding components may drift outside the expected range over time. Because the margin is so narrow, one small resistor can prevent an important voltage rail from enabling. Northwestrepair suggested this may have been done intentionally, but I wouldn’t go that far, it is simply not great engineering.

More importantly, this video could still be useful for other repair centers. They may eventually see similar Gigabyte RTX 5090 cards with no obvious physical damage, but with one missing core voltage rail caused by the same enable circuit.

And yes, I like watching these repair videos over the weekend. They are always fascinating because they show how complex modern graphics cards have become, and how one tiny component can take the whole card down.
