Windows 11 may get CPU burst mode for faster app launches

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new Windows 11 performance feature called “ Low Latency Profile.” According to Windows Central, the feature increases CPU frequency for short periods when the user starts common high-priority actions.

The feature is said to boost the CPU to its maximum frequency for around 1 to 3 seconds. This would apply when opening apps, the Start menu, system flyouts, and context menus. This is not the same as running the CPU at full load at all times, but rather a short frequency burst triggered by the operating system.

Windows Central claims the feature can reduce launch times for built-in apps such as Microsoft Edge and Outlook by up to 40% . The same report says Start menu and context menu launch times may improve by up to 70%. Third-party apps are also expected to benefit, although no public benchmarks are available yet.

Microsoft is working on a special performance boost feature for Windows 11 that is designed to increase the responsiveness of the OS when initiating certain common tasks. According to sources familiar with these plans, this new performance boost feature is called the “Low Latency Profile” and will max out the CPU in short bursts when opening apps, system flyouts, and context menus.

Windows performance efforts

The feature is reportedly already being tested through the Windows Insider Program . It is currently described as automatic and invisible to the user. It is not clear whether Microsoft plans to expose it as a user-controlled setting in the final version.

This appears to be part of Microsoft’s broader Windows K2 effort . We already covered this initiative last month, when report (from the same site) claimed Microsoft was working to reduce Windows 11 bloat, improve gaming performance, and address slow areas such as File Explorer, context menus, Start menu, and the Taskbar.

Windows Central says the feature is still in early testing. Microsoft is reportedly still adjusting the boost duration and how often it activates. Since this has not been officially announced, the final implementation may change before release.
