Apple and Intel reportedly reach preliminary chip-making deal

Intel Foundry may build Apple chips under reported agreement

Apple and Intel have reportedly reached a preliminary agreement that would see Intel manufacture some chips for Apple devices. The information comes from The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, the two companies have been in talks for more than a year. A formal deal was reportedly reached in recent months, although neither Apple nor Intel has confirmed it.

Apple and Intel INTC have reached a preliminary agreement for Intel to manufacture some of the chips that power Apple devices, according to people familiar with the matter.

The report does not say which Apple products would use Intel-made chips. This also does not mean Apple is returning to Intel processors for Macs. The report refers to Intel manufacturing chips for Apple devices, rather than supplying its own x86 CPUs.

Apple moved Mac systems away from Intel processors starting with models introduced in late 2020. The company now uses Apple-designed M-series processors across its current Mac lineup.

Reuters reported earlier this week that Apple had also held exploratory talks with Intel and Samsung about producing device processors in the United States. Those talks were described as early-stage at the time, with no formal orders reported.
