Sony says PlayStation 6 launch timing and price are not decided

PS6 has no release date yet, Sony confirms and mentions memory prices

Sony has not confirmed a launch date or price for its next PlayStation console. During the company’s latest financial call, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki was asked about PlayStation 6 and rising component costs. Totoki said Sony has “not yet decided” when it will launch the “new console” or what price it will carry.

Memory prices were mentioned directly as one of the factors. Totoki said memory prices are expected to remain high in FY2027 because supply will still be limited. He added that Sony must think carefully about how to proceed under those assumptions.

PS6 needs lots of memory

Sony’s future PlayStation hardware could use much larger memory configurations, including a rumored PlayStation handheld with 24GB of memory and a PlayStation 6 console with 30GB.

We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices. We would like to really observe and follow the situation. Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high in the Financial Year 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So under that assumption, we must think carefully about what we will do.

Based on many comments I saw, some users still feel that the PS5 generation has not been fully utilized. Sony is also still updating PS5 Pro features, including the upgraded PSSR rollout that began earlier this year. At the same time, Sony has not even yet released its own PlayStation frame generation library, with Mark Cerny only confirming that such technology should arrive on PlayStation platforms at some point. The point is, there’s still room for improvement for the PS5 series.

Sony also says it can adjust unit sales and promotional plans if market conditions change. But the problem is that the PS5 has already received price hikes, which had already pushed current-generation hardware pricing higher in several markets. The PS5 is no longer cheap, so naturally no one wants to hear about the PS6 right now unless PS5 pricing returns to at least original prices.
