Cooler Master MWE Gold V4 launches with GPU Shield for 12V-2×6 current monitoring

Cooler Master MWE Gold V4 gets native GPU Shield support in China

Cooler Master’s GPU Shield is now reaching retail power supplies. According to Chinese content creator “JustBuy”, with details shared by Uniko’s Hardware, the latest MWE Gold V4 series now supports GPU Shield natively through the PSU-side 12V-2×6 connector.

The MWE Gold V4 is already listed for preorder in China. The 850W model is priced at 659 RMB, around $97, while the 1000W model has also been listed in China. The MWE Gold V4 850W model with “GPU Shield” current management, ATX 3.1 support and a 10-year warranty. Cooler Master is also preparing a dedicated GPU Shield 16-pin cable, according to JustBuy.

So what is GPU Shield? It is another protection system designed to reduce the risk of 16-pin connector damage. We have already seen several versions of this idea, including current detection and temperature detection. Depending on the implementation, these systems can lower GPU power, trigger a warning, or cut power to the GPU entirely.

JustBuy demonstrated the function of Cooler Master GPU Shield in unboxing video using a simulation cable provided by Cooler Master. GPU Shield monitors current on the 12V pins of the 16-pin connector. The PSU has no software readout, so all feedback comes from the built-in LED next to the 12V-2×6 header.

  • 🔴>9.3A – Abnormal Operation – Red LED flashing
  • 🔴>15A – GPU Shield Engaged – Red LED lights up, GPU power cut off

The LED behavior is based on per-pin current. Below 9.3A, the LED stays green and indicates normal operation. Above 9.3A, it flashes  red to show abnormal current. Above 15A, the LED turns solid red and the GPU protection mode triggers a screen blackout. One issue is visibility, as the LED is built into the PSU near the 16-pin header. As far as I see, there’s only a LED signaling, no buzzer of any sort. So imagine playing the game, while your PSU suddenly shuts down and you don’t even know why. THe buzzer would be much better option here, considering LED may not even be seen by most users.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we hear about GPU Shield. Cooler Master first showed GPU Shield at CES 2026, where the company described it as a system for connector seating feedback and current behavior monitoring. It joins other 12V-2×6 protection systems, including MSI GPU Safeguard+, Cybenetics’ Anti-Melt cable prototype, Seasonic’s 12V-2×6 Ti Smart Power Cable and Corsair’s ThermalProtect cable. These products take different approaches, including current imbalance detection, thermal monitoring, audible warnings and shutdown protection. To be honest, just adding any feature would already be great, but let’s hope next-gen GPUs will have some sort of built-in protection mechanism.
