Micron is now sampling 256GB DDR5 RDIMM modules rated for 9200 MT/s

Micron 256GB DDR5 RDIMM reaches 9200 MT/s with 1-gamma DRAM

How much memory is enough? What about a single module with 256GB?

Micron has announced sampling of its new 256GB DDR5 RDIMM for server platforms. The module uses the company’s 1-gamma DRAM process and is rated for speeds up to 9200 MT/s.

According to Micron, the new module is more than 40% faster than DDR5 server memory currently in volume production. The comparison is based on 9200 MT/s against 6400 MT/s modules.

The 256GB RDIMM uses 3D stacking with multiple DRAM dies connected through TSVs, short for through-silicon vias. This allows Micron to increase density while keeping the module in a standard server memory format.

Micron is collaborating with key ecosystem enablers to validate the 256GB 1-gamma DDR5 RDIMM across their respective current and next-generation server platforms. This co-validation ensures broad platform compatibility and accelerates the path to production deployment for data center customers building AI and HPC infrastructure at scale.

Micron also claims a power efficiency advantage versus using two 128GB modules. The company says one 256GB RDIMM operates at 11.1W, while two 128GB modules consume 19.4W combined. That results in more than 40% lower operating power for the same 256GB capacity.

The company is sampling the modules to server ecosystem partners for validation on current and next-generation platforms. Micron is positioning the product for AI, HPC, large language models, inference and high-core-count CPU workloads. It is not meant for consumers, obviously.
