TCL X11L TV reportedly hits nearly 11,000 nits, living rooms may need sunglasses

Vincent Teoh has measured nearly 11,000 nits on an 85-inch TCL X11L SQD Mini LED TV. That puts the display above the 10,000-nit ceiling used by the PQ HDR system, which is the basis for HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision content. At this point, the brightness slider is no longer a setting, it’s a new light source in your living room.

TCL officially rates the X11L at up to HDR 10,000 nits. The 85-inch model has 14,400 dimming zones, while the 98-inch version goes up to 20,736 zones. Vincent’s result suggests the 85-inch unit can exceed TCL’s own rating, at least in a peak HDR test window.

I’m more familiar with light bulb lumens, so I did some math. An 85-inch 16:9 panel at 11,000 nits across the whole screen would be around 68,800 lumens if treated as a diffuse white panel. That is roughly 86 standard 800-lumen light bulbs. Of course, the brightness is likely smaller when only one zone is enabled, and peak HDR brightness does not work that way in normal content.

My point is, it’s super bright and probably consumes just as much power. TCL mentions it consumes 155 kWH in SDR and 690 kWH in HDR mode (per year). It has a maximum 740W power consumption based on the retailer listing.

The closest competitor is Hisense 116UX RGB MiniLED TV. Hisense rates that 116-inch model at up to 8,000 nits. Samsung Display’s new QD-OLED Penta Tandem panels are rated up to 4,500 nits for TVs, while Sony’s BVM-HX3110 professional mastering monitor reaches 4,000 nits.

Well, now it’s hard to imagine I have a laptop with a 250 nit panel.
