Steam Controller has a hidden Wilhelm scream easter egg, triggered by dropping the gamepad
Steam Controller users have found a hidden easter egg in Valve’s new gamepad. If the controller is dropped onto a soft surface, it can occasionally play the Wilhelm scream through its haptic motors.
The discovery was first shared by Reddit user RF3D19. According to the post, the effect was triggered while the controller was used in Steam Big Picture Mode. The user later added a video and said the trigger appears to have a cooldown of around one minute.
The sound is apparently quiet and does not appear on every drop. Users who want to reproduce the Easter Egg, should use soft surface such as a bed or pillow.
The controller does not even have speakers
The Steam Controller does not rely on a visible speaker for this effect. Reports suggest the sound is generated through the controller’s haptic motors. This is similar to how advanced rumble systems can reproduce tones or short audio-like effects through vibration. I’m sure someone noticed this during production, and Valve decided to tweak it for fun.
The Controller went on sale on May 4th.
