Windows Update is getting fixes for unwanted GPU driver rollbacks

Microsoft to reduce Windows Update GPU driver downgrades

Windows Update will use narrower GPU driver targeting, while a separate cloud recovery system will roll back faulty drivers automatically.

Microsoft is changing how Windows Update handles display drivers after reports that Windows 11 can replace user-installed GPU drivers with older versions . This can affect users who install newer Intel, AMD or NVIDIA drivers manually, only for Windows Update to later apply an older OEM-approved package. I think everyone who used to install Windows 11 has experienced this issue at least once.

According to Windows Latest, Microsoft confirmed that the issue is tied to driver ranking and targeting. Some display drivers use broad 4-part Hardware IDs, which can make Windows Update treat an older driver as the best match for a system.

No more unexpected driver changes

Microsoft’s fix is a narrower targeting model for display drivers. New submissions can use 2-part Hardware IDs combined with Computer Hardware IDs, or CHIDs. This should make driver delivery more specific to each PC model or hardware configuration.

The change will not fix every case at once. The policy applies to new display driver submissions for new devices, while existing drivers may still be downgraded. The pilot runs from April to September 2026, with wider enforcement planned between Q4 2026 and Q1 2027. So yes, this will take time before we start to get a better driver experience.

Microsoft is also adding Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery. This feature can roll back a problematic driver delivered through Windows Update and restore a previously working version, without requiring users to uninstall it manually. This recovery system is being tested with hardware partners and should begin rolling out gradually in September. It is separate from the GPU driver targeting change, but both updates address Windows Update driver delivery and recovery.
