Corsair’s Jon Gerow explains why 12V-2×6 still needs monitoring

Corsair recently published a technical overview for its ThermalProtect 12V-2×6 cable, this time with more background on why the revised GPU power connector is still not a complete fix. The article was written by Jon Gerow, better known as JonnyGuru, who has worked at Corsair for more than 13 years.

We already covered the ThermalProtect cable when it launched at $24.99. The new Corsair post is more interesting because it explains why the company believes 12V-2×6 still leaves room for failure. According to Corsair, the revised connector fixed the original 12VHPWR partial-insertion problem by shortening the sense pins relative to the power pins. This means the GPU should not receive the same power authorization unless the connector is seated correctly.

Why 12V-2×6 is still not foolproof

The issue is that connectors do not always stay seated. Corsair says cable tension, vibration, cable stiffness, and repeated insertions can gradually work the connector loose over time. In other words, a cable that clicked in correctly during assembly may still develop poor contact later. Once that happens, the same basic problem returns: higher resistance at the pins creates heat under load.

The revised mechanical design is a real improvement. But it’s not a complete solution, because connectors don’t stay fully seated forever.

Cable tension from routing, vibration, the weight of a stiff cable pulling at the connector, repeated insertions over time – any of these can gradually work a connector loose. A connector that clicked in perfectly when you first built your system can develop marginal contact six months later without any visible indication. The physics of partial-contact heating are identical whether it was never fully inserted or worked loose after the fact.

According to Corsair, their cable tries to catch that condition without using software, firmware, a PSU controller, or any GPU-specific support. The cable has a passive bimetallic thermal switch inside the cable comb, placed 30mm from the GPU-side connector. Corsair says heat from the connector travels through the copper power wires, and the switch opens when the comb reaches 65°C ±5°C. Corsair explains that this method dos not care what PSU you have, it does not need software and it is fully passive without requirement for power.

In Corsair’s test, a GeForce RTX 5090 was run in a 60°C environment with a deliberate 3mm connector gap. The connector reached more than 115°C, and ThermalProtect activated in less than 1 minute and 20 seconds.

The cable does not require a Corsair PSU, a specific GPU vendor, or a software layer. It works with native 12V-2×6 GPUs and native 12V-2×6 PSU outputs from any brand. It also works with older 12VHPWR sockets because the housing geometry is the same. Adapter setups are not supported, because 2×8-pin to 12V-2×6 adapters move the risky junction outside the area the switch can monitor.
