PS5 Linux support reaches firmware 6.02 on original PlayStation 5 consoles

PS5 Linux project expands to PS5 firmware 5.50, 6.00 and 6.02

PS5 Linux support has expanded beyond the original 3.xx and 4.xx firmware range. The official ps5-linux loader now lists support for PS5 Phat consoles running firmware 3.00 through 6.02, with some differences in M.2 SSD support depending on version.

Linux support now goes to 6.02

The project initially focused on older PlayStation 5 firmware, which limited it to a smaller group of consoles. The current compatibility list now includes 3.00, 3.10, 3.20 and 3.21 without M.2 support. Firmware 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51, 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50, 6.00 and 6.02 are listed with M.2 support. The project remains limited to PS5 Phat models.

PS5 Linux uses a patched hypervisor vulnerability to boot Linux on Sony’s console hardware. According to the project page, this gives Linux access to the PS5’s eight Zen 2 CPU cores, 16 threads, RDNA 2 GPU and HDMI 4K60 output.

Jailbreak work is moving further ahead

PS5 jailbreaking is still split by firmware and console type. Firmware 10.00 and 10.01 are presented as the current best targets for a usable jailbreak, with Kstuff and etaHEN support for PS4 FPKGs, PS5 backups, homebrew and related tools. Lower firmware versions from 3.xx to 4.51 remain important because they have hypervisor exploits and Linux support.

The higher firmware range is less straightforward. Firmware 10.20 to 12.00 is described as possible but inconvenient, currently requiring a LuaCore entry point tied to Star Wars Racer Revenge. Yes, you literally have to use a game to exploit the console. It has some old PS2-game save vulnerability that apparently hackers like to explore.
