CrystalDiskInfo improves fake SSD detection in version 9.9.0

CrystalDiskInfo 9.9.0 has been released with a small but useful change for SSD buyers. The latest version can now show a “[FAKE]” label for counterfeit Samsung SSDs, according to hiyohiyo, the developer behind CrystalDiskInfo and CrystalDiskMark.

This follows several reports of fake Samsung 990 PRO drives that looked much closer to real models than earlier clones. As reported, fake 990 PRO that reached 7.2 GB/s sequential read speeds but still failed in real-world testing. Another case involved a fake Samsung SSD locked to around 20 MB/s , where Samsung Magician confirmed that the drive was counterfeit.

More USB bridge and JMicron JMS59 support

CrystalDiskInfo 9.9.0 also adds support for JMicron JMS59x and fixes an issue where “JMS586 New” was not working correctly. The update also improves the security of the DLL loading process. This is a maintenance change rather than a new user-facing feature, but it is still worth noting for a tool that many users download after buying new storage hardware.

Samsung previously advised users to check drives with Samsung Magician and buy from authorized sellers. CrystalDiskInfo’s new label does not replace that process, but it should make some fake Samsung SSDs easier to spot before users run more detailed checks.
