OneXPlayer handhelds get Valve-backed Linux driver in Linux 7.2

OneXPlayer Linux support expands with new hid-oxp driver

RGB, vibration and button mapping support

OneXPlayer handhelds are set to receive a new Linux configuration driver with the Linux 7.2 kernel cycle. The driver is called “hid-oxp” and targets OneXPlayer HID configuration devices. According to Phoronix, the driver has moved into the HID subsystem’s “for-7.2/oxp” branch. It is also queued in the HID “for-next” branch ahead of the Linux 7.2 merge window expected in June.

The driver was developed by Derek J. Clark, who has been working on Linux handheld support as part of Valve’s Linux efforts . Phoronix notes that the new driver is GPLv2+ and carries Valve Corporation copyright.

The hid-oxp driver adds support for RGB lighting controls, vibration intensity settings and hardware-level button mapping. RGB controls include brightness, multi-intensity, effects, on/off toggling and effect speed.

Should Intel-based handhelds focus on Linux?

This is useful timing for Intel-based handhelds. Microsoft’s most visible handheld push is still built around AMD Ryzen hardware, with the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X using Ryzen Z2-series processors. For Intel-based devices, there is less reason to rely only on Windows if Linux support continues to improve at the kernel level.

OneXPlayer still offers AMD-based systems, including Ryzen AI Max+ 395 devices such as the Super X and X2 Mini. Those systems sit closer to the niche and enthusiast segment due to their larger power targets, higher memory options and higher launch pricing.

At the same time, the company has also been pushing Intel-based designs. The OneXPlayer X1 Air uses Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, while Super V has been reported as one of the first gaming tablets based on Intel Panther Lake with Arc B390 graphics. This makes Valve’s work on Linux handheld support more relevant beyond Steam Deck-style AMD systems.

The patch series mentions two generations of OneXPlayer HID protocol. The first generation, used by the OneXPlayer F1 series, only exposes RGB control over HID. The second generation, used by devices such as the X1 mini series, G1 series and AOKZOE A1X.
