AMD EPYC 8005 server CPUs for telco

AMD has now released its EPYC 8005 “Sorano” server CPU series, following the earlier announcement around MWC 2026. We already covered Sorano in February, but AMD has now shared more details.
EPYC 8005 is not using Zen 5c , despite being the successor to EPYC 8004 “Siena,” which used Zen 4c. AMD moved this lineup to full Zen 5 cores. This also increases L3 cache and raises clock speeds, with current SKUs reaching up to 4.5 GHz.
Full Zen 5 instead of Zen 5c
The top model is the EPYC 8635P with 84 cores , 168 threads, 384MB of L3 cache and a 225W default TDP. AMD’s own blog says the new series scales from 8 to 84 Zen 5 cores and targets single-socket systems for edge, telco and cloud storage deployments.
Compared with the previous EPYC 8004 generation, AMD claims the 84-core EPYC 8635P delivers 40% higher top-stack integer performance and 9.5% higher performance per watt than the 64-core predecessor. AMD also compares the 8635P against Intel’s 40-core Xeon 6716P-B, claiming 91% higher integer performance at 10W lower TDP.

Sorano also updates the memory side of the platform. AMD lists support for 6-channel DDR5-6400 ECC memory and 96 PCIe Gen5 lanes. This keeps the platform below the larger EPYC 9005 series, but gives storage and networking systems more I/O than EPYC 4005.
AMD is also targeting telco workloads with EPYC 8005. The company says the series includes LDPC optimizations for 5G Layer 1 processing. In Samsung’s multi-cell vRAN test, a single server with EPYC 8635P reportedly supported 54 cell networks with 9.5 Gb/s downlink and 2.0 Gb/s uplink.
