Samsung’s nearline SSDs may offer up to 50PB per 4U shelf
The information comes from Blocks & Files, which spoke with a company called Scality about its Autonomous Data Infrastructure platform. During the briefing, Scality chief product officer Erwan Girard said Samsung and Solidigm are both developing next-generation flash for nearline storage.
Scality says it already has early drives in its lab and is testing them. Samsung’s version is reportedly planned in EDSFF E3.L or E2 form factors, with capacities starting at 250TB and scaling up to 1PB per drive. Enough to download GTA5 2300 times.
Samsung targets hard drive replacement
According to Scality, Samsung sees these drives as HDD replacements for dense storage racks. Blocks & Files says the drives could reach almost 50PB in a 4U shelf, with a full rack approaching half an exabyte. The flash is not standard QLC. Girard says endurance is lower, at around 0.1 drive writes per day, compared with around 0.5 DWPD for current QLC drives.

Scality says early lab tests showed no visible performance gap between QLC and nearline flash. The company also confirmed a co-development agreement with Samsung Memory Research Center, though it is not exclusive.
