Rocket League teaser points to Unreal Engine 6 upgrade

Psyonix has yet to confirm engine migration details

Rocket League may finally be close to a bigger engine update, although the official details are still limited.

During the Rocket League Paris Major buildup, Psyonix teased a reveal during the semifinals. A clip shared by Sheep Esports’ Rocket League account points to Unreal Engine 6 being involved.

Rocket League still runs on Unreal Engine 3, the same base technology used since the game launched in 2015. Psyonix confirmed years ago that an engine upgrade was in development, but no public version of the game has moved away from UE3 yet. The latest teaser now confirms that Rocket League is moving to Unreal Engine 6.

In March this year, Epic Games’s CEO Tim Sweeney said Epic is evolving from Unreal Engine 5 and Unreal Editor for Fortnite toward Unreal Engine 6, with broader “next generation of Epic” plans later this year. So if I’m not mistaken, this is the second game confirmed to be moving to UE6.

Rocket League’s engine migration has been discussed for years. In 2021, Psyonix said that upgrading the technology behind Rocket League, including a move to Unreal Engine 5, was an active long-term project. Since then, there has been no public release of a new engine version for the main game.
