Star Citizen reaches $1 billion in player funding
Star Citizen has now passed $1 billion in crowdfunding support. The figure comes more than a decade after Cloud Imperium Games first announced the PC space sim in 2012.
The game started with a Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $2 million. Cloud Imperium continued funding development through its own platform, where players can pledge money, buy access and purchase ships or other in-game content. The official Roberts Space Industries funding page states that pledged money goes directly toward development.

Still not released as a finished game
Star Citizen remains in alpha and still does not have a confirmed full release date. The project was originally targeting a 2014 release. The single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is still listed for a 2026 release.
Cloud Imperium continues to expand the playable alpha through updates. The Alpha 4.5 version released recently added an engineering role, including ship power management, repairs, component replacement and onboard fire control.
The $1 billion figure makes Star Citizen one of the largest crowdfunded game projects ever, but the final release timeline remains unclear.
