Acer Predator Atlas 8 handheld expected to use Intel Arc G3 platform
Acer is preparing a new gaming handheld under its Predator brand. The device is currently known as Predator Atlas 8 , suggesting an 8-inch class system aimed at the same market as the ROG Ally, Legion Go and MSI Claw.
The handheld is expected to use Intel’s new Arc G3 platform for gaming handhelds. Intel is expected to offer both Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme variants, although we do not have confirmation which version Acer will use for the Atlas 8. No other specifications are available at this point.
Arc G3 on board
The G3 is a new special series from Intel. The company will have two chips, an Extreme variant and a non-Extreme model, both featuring a 14-core configuration (2P+8E+4LP). They are quite similar, except for the GPU and clocks.
The Extreme version has Arc B390 graphics with the full 12 Xe3 GPU configuration, whereas the non-Extreme model will have B370 10 Xe3 cores. This should result in a much smaller performance difference compared to the Ryzen Z2 series, which seems to cover AMD’s wide portfolio of Zen 2, Zen 3, Zen 4, and Zen 5 architectures, not to mention the mix of RDNA architectures.
Nitro and Predator handhelds
This would be Acer’s second (or third?) attempt at the handheld market after the Nitro Blaze series. Acer announced three Nitro Blaze handhelds: Blaze 7, Blaze 8 and Blaze 11. So far, only the Blaze 7 appears to have reached retail, while the Blaze 8 and Blaze 11 remain absent from normal store listings. These handhelds were announced later.
I would like to remind our readers that we asked Acer about this strange delay and lack of updates on Blaze 8 and Blaze 11. Basically asking if the handhelds had been abandoned, but the company did not respond to our inquiry.
Acer and handelds
With Predator Atlas 8 now appearing on Acer’s roadmap, it seems the company may be moving its handheld plans from Nitro to Predator branding, meaning more premium devices. But should buyers invest in a handheld from a company that failed to bring two out of three announced products to market? The Blaze 7 is also basically a rebrand of an AYN console, so Acer’s start in the handheld market has not been strong.
