Power outage affecting large portion of downtown Toronto

A large portion of downtown Toronto is experiencing a power outage on Tuesday.

When it began just before noon, up to 2,000 customers were impacted, with the number dropping soon after as crews work to get power restored.

Toronto police say they are aware of the outage, which is affecting traffic lights, and advise that drivers treat all intersections as four-way stops.

The TTC posted on X that “there is a power issue at St. Patrick station which is causing delays.”

The outage also impacted all buildings at the Toronto Metropolitan University and the Eaton Centre, but as per the , power has been restored. However the Ontario Ombudsman’s office close by, near Bay and Albert streets, closed for the day due to the outage.

In a statement, the University Health Network (UHN) said that Toronto General Hospital is experiencing a power outage.

“Backup generators are functioning and there is no widespread impact to patient care,” they said. “Care teams will reach out directly to any patients who may experience a delay.”

There was an outage at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, but power has been restored. All other UHN sites were not affected, but they encouraged any patients concerned about their appointments to reach out to their care team.

Power has also been restored at SickKids Hospital after a temporary outage.

“Teams are assessing the impacts. Care is continuing and the hospital is operating, including the Emergency Department and clinics,” they said in a statement.

Hydro One said in a post on X that they are responding to a fire at the Terauley Transmission Station near Bay and Dundas Streets in the downtown core.
