Apple Wallet driver’s license support expanding to another new state

Just a few days after expanding to Arkansas , a new report today says Apple Wallet support for driver’s licenses is set to come to yet another new state soon.

Today’s rumor comes from MacRumors and cites “a person familiar with the matter.” According to the report, Apple Wallet driver’s license support is set to expand to Virginia. There’s no timetable given in the story, so it’s unclear whether the rollout is imminent.

Last year, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles said it planned to support IDs in Apple Wallet “in the future,” but without any further details.

Virginia would mark the 15th state in which Apple Wallet’s driver’s license support is available, along with Puerto Rico. Here’s the full list as of this week:

  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Montana
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico
  • West Virginia

Other states committed to supporting the feature include:

Digital IDs stored in Apple Wallet can be used at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 airports. They’re also supported at select venues and businesses, in person, in-app, and online.

As I explained the other day, however, the state-by-state rollout isn’t quite as notable as it used to be. Last year, Apple launched a new Digital ID feature last year powered by your US passport. This means anyone with a passport can create a Digital ID in Apple Wallet, regardless of whether their state supports the feature
