Counterfeit G.Skill and V-Color DDR5 modules reportedly hit China
Fake DIMMs use matching PCBs and heat spreaders
Counterfeit DDR5 memory modules using G.Skill and V-Color branding have reportedly appeared on Chinese marketplaces. Representatives for both companies confirmed the issue at Computex 2026.
This is not the usual case of old memory hidden under a new heat spreader. The reported modules use PCBs that look identical to those used by G.Skill and V-Color. The heat spreaders are also said to match the original designs, which makes visual checks much harder.
V-Color says the fake modules are now common enough to affect sales to some clients. The company said it has not yet inspected any of the counterfeit kits directly, so it cannot confirm which DRAM ICs are being used. V-Color also said it only uses SK hynix memory for its own modules.
Fake modules and dummy DDR5 modules
DDR5 prices have been rising for months, and high-end kits are now much more expensive than they were last year. This creates more room for counterfeit products, mainly through gray-market and second-hand channels. And we have seen many different ways to scam people who try to find cheaper memory, which involves sending dummy modules instead of memory-equipped ones, or even creating a full fake modules .
G.Skill also confirmed that counterfeit modules carrying its branding are being sold in China. The company said the problem is not new and recommends buying memory from official partners and authorized resellers.
