AMD explains why Ryzen 7 7700X3D came before Ryzen 5 9600X3D
AMD has not announced the Ryzen 5 9600X3D, but the company has not ruled out a six-core Zen 5 processor with 3D V-Cache. David McAfee, AMD corporate vice president and general manager of Ryzen and Radeon, said at Computex that such a product may be something AMD looks at later this year.
The comment came shortly after AMD introduced the Ryzen 7 7700X3D , an eight-core AM5 processor based on Zen 4 rather than Zen 5. AMD says this CPU will launch on July 16 with 8 cores, 104MB of total cache, up to 4.5 GHz boost and a $329 suggested price.
9600X3D Rumors are not new
The Ryzen 5 9600X3D has already appeared in AMD materials before . We reported last year that AMD listed the six-core Zen 5 X3D model on a support page for the Radeon AI PRO R9700, alongside other Ryzen 9000X3D processors. That listing did not turn into a product launch, and AMD has still not confirmed retail availability.

According to McAfee, six-core X3D parts are less common in AMD’s product planning than eight-core models. The Ryzen 5 7600X3D was treated as a limited-run product and was not available through all retail partners. AMD also says gamers still tend to prefer eight-core CPUs, even though the gaming gap between six and eight cores is often limited.
That lines up with earlier testing of AMD’s X3D lineup. In one comparison, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D and Ryzen 7 7800X3D were separated by around 6% to 10% in games, depending on settings and test conditions.
Still, more options the better.
