Nintendo confirms new Switch 2 model for EU
New model will carry OSM marking on the box.
Nintendo has confirmed that it is preparing new versions of its current products for the European market to comply with EU battery regulations. The change applies to products with model numbers starting with “BEE,” which includes the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
The company says future compliant versions will receive unique model numbers. They will also carry an additional “OSM” code on the packaging, marking them as separate products for regulatory purposes.
The change is tied to Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. From February 18, 2027, batteries integrated into certain products sold in the EU must be easily replaceable by end users during the lifetime of the device.
“Nintendo is implementing measures to comply with these requirements by preparing versions of products to meet the Regulation. […]
“For current products with model numbers starting with “BEE”, future compliant versions will have unique model numbers and the additional code “OSM” visible on the packaging, designating them as separate products for regulatory purposes.”
This now confirms an earlier Nikkei report from March, which claimed that Nintendo was preparing a revised Switch 2 model for Europe. We covered that report at the time, when the change was still unconfirmed.
Nintendo has not explained what design changes will be made to the Switch 2. The current model does not have a simple battery replacement process. iFixit’s teardown showed that removing the battery requires multiple steps, pry tools and solvent.
