DisplayPort 2.1 monitors may silently drop from UHBR20 to UHBR10 without a proper DP80 cable
The port is not enough.

DisplayPort 2.1 is now common on high-end graphics cards and monitors, but the cable can still decide whether users actually get the full UHBR20 link. TechSpot shows that a DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 monitor connected to a GeForce RTX 5090 may silently fall back to a lower-bandwidth mode when the wrong cable is used. The display still works, and users can still select 4K 240Hz 10-bit output, but the connection may no longer run at 80 Gbps.
The test used an ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM3, a 32-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED monitor with DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 support. With the short DP80 cable supplied with the monitor, GPU-Z reported four lanes at 20 Gbps each, which confirms the full UHBR20 link.

When a random DisplayPort cable was used instead, GPU-Z showed the link dropping to 10 Gbps per lane. That means UHBR10 mode, or 40 Gbps total bandwidth. This is not enough for uncompressed 4K 240Hz 10-bit RGB, so DSC is enabled to keep the mode available.
The same behavior was observed with a DP54 cable. The cable was recognized as having a higher maximum link rate than a basic cable, but the active connection still ran at UHBR10. According to the test, NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series appears to check cable capability and select a safer link mode to avoid flickering, blank screens, or connection drops.
Invisible downgrade
This does not mean the monitor stops working. It also does not mean users will see a clear image quality loss. Display Stream Compression is designed to be visually lossless, and many 4K 240Hz monitors already rely on it over DisplayPort 1.4. The difference is that users who bought a UHBR20 monitor to avoid DSC may still end up using DSC if the cable is not DP80-certified.
Users should no longer have an issue finding such cables, they are note ven that expensive. VESA even introduced DP80LL active cables with DisplayPort 2.1b, allowing UHBR20 over up to three meters. These cables were announced at CES 2025 in collaboration with NVIDIA.
For buyers, the safest check is still the DP80 logo and VESA’s certification database:

Finding the right cable
A product box saying DisplayPort 2.1 is not enough on its own, because DP40, DP54 and DP80 refer to different bandwidth tiers. DP80 is the one required for UHBR20 and the full 80 Gbps link. How to spot such a cable? Well, it’s quite easy actually. On Amazon, multiple sellers I checked properly advertise the certification. Some even announce it for shorter cables, while their longer cables are not certified, so make sure to check each page.
