4Gamers interviewed AMD’s David McAfee during Computex 2026
AMD expects DDR5 memory prices to recover slowly, with the market returning to normal levels in around two years.
The Taiwanese outlet interviewed David McAfee, AMD Global Vice President and General Manager of Client Channel Business, during Computex 2026. The discussion covered the current memory shortage, DDR5 pricing, and AMD’s long-term platform planning.
According to 4Gamers, McAfee said DDR4 capacity has been shrinking over the past one to two years, while most memory makers have already invested heavily in DDR5 production. The report also links the current DDR5 price increase to demand from the AI market, which continues to absorb large amounts of memory supply.
DDR5 is still expensive today, but prices are expected to recover slowly. According to 4Gamers, AMD’s David McAfee expects DDR5 prices to recover slowly and return to normal levels in about two years.

Samsung and Micron are reportedly expanding production capacity, while China’s CXMT is also expanding DDR5 output. This does not mean prices will drop quickly. The memory market has a long history of supply and demand cycles, but this one is now expected to take longer to correct.
DDR6 and PCIe Gen6 plans
The same interview also touched on AMD’s AM5 platform plans. McAfee reportedly said socket strategy is a difficult decision because changing CPU pins creates higher costs at the start of a new platform. AMD is said to be evaluating whether AM5 can continue to support future standards such as DDR6 memory and PCIe 6.0 before deciding when a socket change is needed.
This follows AMD’s recent Computex update, where the company extended AM5 support through 2029 . We covered that roadmap update earlier. AMD’s previous official wording said: “Socket AM5 platforms are built to last, with support through 2027 and beyond.”
AMD has not announced an AM6 socket. For now, AM5 remains the active desktop platform for Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000G, Ryzen 9000, and future Ryzen processors.
