The 16-pin power cable should not need monthly checks
RTX 5090 user finds melted 12VHPWR cable after routine connector checks.

A new RTX 5090 connector report has appeared on Reddit, this time with a slightly different detail. The owner says he regularly inspected the 12V-2×6 connector as part of routine PC maintenance.
The system used an MSI GeForce RTX 5090 SUPRIM with a Corsair RM1000x power supply and Corsair’s official Type 4 12V-2×6 cable. The card was vertically mounted, and the user claims the cable had 7 to 9 cm of straight clearance before any bend.
Routine checks may not help
According to the post, the user unplugged and inspected the 16-pin connector every three months . He also says he pushed the connector in every month while cleaning the system to make sure it remained fully seated. After a few weeks of gaming, he found a melted cable end and blackening inside the GPU power socket.
During the first RTX 4090 12VHPWR reports, many users started disconnecting the cable to check for damage. That may help spot early discoloration, but repeated unplugging and reseating can also wear the terminals or change the fit over time.
30 unplugs
Corsair itself says terminals of this type commonly have a mating-cycle life of 30 cycles. Seasonic also lists its 12VHPWR/12V-2×6 cable as designed for 30 mating cycles. This does not mean the cable fails after the 30th insertion, but it does mean the connector was not designed for frequent inspection and reseating. Still, that should leave our RTX 5090 user with 24 more cycles left.
Interestingly, the user also had a sensor panel next to the PC and says he monitored telemetry data in real time. However, that only showed PSU and GPU-side readings. There was still no direct data from the connector itself, unless users add custom adapters or rely on PSU-side monitoring features.
Next-gen RTX urgently needs a fix
This is also why active monitoring is starting to appear in newer designs. ASUS offers Power Detector+ on selected ROG Astral cards, while Cooler Master has introduced GPU Shield for 12V-2×6 monitoring on its new MWE Gold V4 power supplies. If NVIDIA’s next GPU generation still relies on the same compact power connector, built-in monitoring should probably become standard rather than a premium feature.
