Intel Z990 chipset photographed, package and power figures detailed
Z990 PCH reportedly measures 25 x 24 mm.
Jaykihn and LC Tech Leaks (and News) have shared new details on Intel’s Z990 chipset, including package size, die size and power figures. The chipset was photographed on an unknown motherboard, but the image does not show enough of the PCB to confirm the board vendor.

According to Jaykihn, the Z990 PCH package measures 25 x 24 mm. The exposed die reportedly measures 11.15 x 6.5 mm, which works out to around 72.5 mm². For comparison, Z890 measures 28 x 23.5 mm at package level and 11.376 x 8.165 mm at die level. This gives Z890 a package area of 658 mm² and a die area of around 92.9 mm². The reported Z990 package would be 600 mm², or around 8.8% smaller than Z890. The die would be around 22% smaller.

The public Z890 page only confirms the package size and the official 6W chipset base power. Intel also lists Z890 with 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, DMI 4.0 x8 and up to five USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 ports.
Z990 with peak 14W power use, 7.9W base power
Power draw is the more interesting part of this leak. Jaykihn says the rumored 14W figure for Z990 is real, but only when a full PCIe 5.0 configuration is attached. In a more typical configuration, the chipset is reportedly rated at 7.9W. That is 1.9W higher than Z890’s official 6W base power.
The same source also says Z970 should be much closer to Z890, with a reported 6.4W figure. This would put Z970 only 0.4W above Z890, while Z990 would sit higher due to the added I/O configuration. This lines up with earlier leaks suggesting Intel will separate the next desktop platform into Z990 and Z970 chipsets.
Keep in mind this 14W figure assumes full chipset residency with Gen 5 devices.
The base power of the Z990 PCH is 7.9W, and the base power of the Z970 is 6.4W. Both share a TJMax of 113C.

We can only guess which motherboard is shown in the photo. GIGABYTE is the safest candidate , since it already showed an actual Z990 board at Computex. PCWorld later found the “AORUS Z990 PRO” label on that board. MaxSun is another possibility, as we have heard the company also showed new boards to selected media.
