Intel says Wildcat Lake and Firefly are designed to rethink mainstream laptops
Intel wants mainstream laptops to stop feeling like old budget systems.

Intel has shared more details on Project Firefly, its platform program for mainstream laptops based on Intel Core Series 3, codenamed Wildcat Lake. The company says the goal is not only to make laptops cheaper, but to improve the entire system around the processor.
Intel says mainstream buyers are value-conscious users who want good battery life, fast response times and compatibility with existing ports and peripherals. The company says this segment often receives older technologies with small updates, because premium platform features are becoming harder to move into lower price bands.
This is where Wildcat Lake and Firefly come together. Intel says the processor alone is not enough, because buyers do not purchase a CPU by itself. They buy a full laptop, so the screen, chassis, cooling, battery, I/O and software support all have to be designed around the same cost target.

Phone supply chain comes to laptops
Project Firefly is Intel’s attempt to use parts of the mobile phone and tablet supply chain for PC designs. Intel says the phone market has larger volume, mature ODMs, cheaper components and faster product cycles than the traditional PC supply chain.
As we covered in May , Firefly was first presented as a way to build cheaper Wildcat Lake laptops by using China’s mature phone supply chain. Intel now says the program acts like a reference design, or “recipe,” which OEMs can customize rather than build from scratch. That should help partners reduce development time while still allowing different chassis, I/O and product designs.






6-core Wildcat Lake
Intel says Wildcat Lake was built with the same approach. The chip uses a monolithic design instead of a multi-tile package to reduce SoC cost. Intel also mentions cheaper packaging, a six-layer Type 3 motherboard and other platform-level changes that reduce total system cost.
The CPU configuration includes 2 P-cores and 4 LP E-cores. Intel also confirmed a smaller NPU and right-sized integrated graphics. The company says this gives the platform enough local AI and hybrid AI support for mainstream systems, without adding the larger AI hardware expected from premium laptops.
Reference design for partners
Intel’s own Firefly reference system is 12.9 mm thick and uses a metal chassis. The prototype shown in the video has no visible intake vents on the bottom cover, with cooling handled through the rear section. The system also includes HDMI, USB-A, USB-C with Thunderbolt and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Core Logic for quicker developement
Intel also detailed several changes inspired by mobile devices. These include thinner heatpipe designs, a standardized cable interface between the mainboard and I/O board, smaller phone-derived audio codecs and phone-style memory integration. Intel calls one of these designs a “Core Logic Module,” combining the Intel SoC with two phone-derived memory chips as a verified module for OEMs.

Intel says this work can shorten development cycles. According to the company, some ODM partners were able to move from the first Firefly discussions to CES system demonstrations in about three months. Intel also claims Lenovo brought one Firefly-based design to market in less than three months after using the baseline work already done with ODMs.
The company says Firefly is not aimed at one specific competitor or laptop design. Instead, Intel presents it as a way to bring newer platform features to a wider range of users. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS and other partners are already working on Wildcat Lake-based mainstream systems, according to Intel.
