Ubisoft reportedly tried to embargo coverage of layoffs and studio closures

Ubisoft layoffs affect Winnipeg, Belgrade, Barcelona and publishing teams

Up to 380 employees could be affected.

Ubisoft has reportedly announced another internal restructuring that includes two studio closures and changes across multiple teams. According to Insider Gaming, the update was posted to Ubisoft’s internal communications channel on June 10. The message said Ubisoft is simplifying its organization, reducing its cost base and adjusting activity levels after recent portfolio reviews. The company said up to 380 employees could be affected, pending consultations.

  • Ubisoft Winnipeg , 65 employees laid off, and the studio closed
  • Ubisoft Belgrade, approximately 100 employees were laid off, and the studio closed
  • Ubisoft Barcelona , 51 employees laid off
  • Rainbow Six Siege , 120 employees ramped off
  • Ubisoft San Francisco, undisclosed number of employees laid off

The restructuring includes the closure of Ubisoft Winnipeg and Ubisoft Belgrade. Ubisoft Barcelona is also facing a proposed restructuring that would refocus the studio on Rainbow Six, subject to employee representative consultations. Insider Gaming reports that Ubisoft Winnipeg had 65 employees, while Ubisoft Belgrade had around 100 employees. The report also lists 51 layoffs at Ubisoft Barcelona, 120 developers being moved off Rainbow Six Siege, and an undisclosed number of layoffs at Ubisoft San Francisco.

The Rainbow Six Siege changes are reportedly not layoffs for now. Insider Gaming says those employees are being moved off the project, although their next assignments were not disclosed. Ubisoft told the outlet that project staffing can change as development and live operations move through different stages.

Ubisoft tries to embargo layoffs

The reason I thought this news may be interesting is that Ubisoft reportedly tried to impose an embargo on layoffs. This is unusual and should not be standard practice. According to Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw, employees were informed earlier in the day before several contacted the publication. Aftermath also reported that Ubisoft shared the news with some media under a 1 PM ET embargo.

Such embargoes have little effect on journalists who report independently. But for gaming-focused media that rely on good relations with publishers and development studios, this can create a difficult choice.

Straw called it the most embarrassing thing he has seen in 16 years of covering gaming news.

Ubisoft EMBARGOED news to outlets about the layoffs and studio closures, FYI.Employees were told this morning. And then many reached out to us.Companies trying to embargo layoffs and closures might be the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen in my 16 years.
