Never lit candles and go to sleep
A Redditor has managed to create one of the more confusing PC repair cases of the week. Their desk reportedly collapsed while he was sleeping, sending melted candle wax directly into a desktop PC. The CPU cooler and GPU were among the most affected components.
The user said he was afraid to power the system on, while their father apparently suggested using it as normal. Well, that’s not the best idea.
What to do if this ever happens to you
If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have lit candles around your PC to summon old GPU pricing, candle wax is usually non-conductive. This means the PC is not automatically dead just because the wax touched the motherboard or graphics card.
The bad news is that non-conductive does not mean harmless. Wax can coat hot components and act as insulation. On a graphics card, this can raise temperatures, block heatsink fins, or attach itself to fan blades. Probably the worst that may happen is a wax spill on the GPU fan, it may block it from spinning, or it may permanently damage the fan bearings.

The system should stay powered off until the affected parts are cleaned. Large chunks of hardened wax can be removed carefully with a plastic tool. Metal tools should be avoided near PCBs, connectors, capacitors, and exposed components.
If the wax reached the GPU PCB, motherboard, PCIe slot, PSU, or fan motors, the safest option is a repair shop. A full cleanup may require disassembly, controlled low heat, 99% isopropyl alcohol, and a lot of patience.
There is also a more important warning here. Never sleep with candles lit, and never place them near a PC, monitor, desk edge, cable mess, or anything that may fall over. In this case, the PC may survive. The house was the more expensive part at risk.
Candles may be dangerous
Let me finish this post by bringing some numbers. According to US National Fire Protection Association, candles start around 5,830 home fires in the US each year, or roughly 20 per day. They account for about 2% of reported home structure fires.
