Unreal Engine 5.8 released with Mesh Terrain, MegaLights and MetaHuman upgrades

Epic Games has released Unreal Engine 5.8, a new engine update focused on open-world creation, rendering, MetaHuman workflows and editor tools. The company says this is the last planned major Unreal Engine 5 release on its roadmap as work shifts toward UE6.
3D terrain and PCG edits
The main worldbuilding update is Mesh Terrain, an experimental 3D mesh-based terrain system. Unlike the existing Landscape tool and other 2.5D heightfield systems, it supports overhangs, floating islands and tunnels.
Procedural Content Generation now supports manual edits on top of generated content without breaking the procedural setup. Epic also added an experimental Procedural Vegetation Editor for Nanite-ready trees and vegetation.

MetaHuman crowds and capture
UE 5.8 adds experimental MetaHuman Collections for crowd creation. Epic says the system can scale to hundreds of MetaHumans on mobile and thousands on higher-end platforms.
Mesh to MetaHuman can now conform full bodies, not only heads. MetaHuman Animator also supports full-body capture from a single off-actor camera without a mocap rig, helmet camera or markers.

MegaLights and Lumen Lite
MegaLights is now Production-Ready. The feature allows scenes to use many dynamic and shadowed area lights, with reduced noise and a 60 FPS target on current-generation consoles.
Lumen Lite is also available. Epic says it is twice as fast as Lumen High Quality and can run on Nintendo Switch 2 at 60 FPS. The mode is also supported on PC.

LLM plugin and Sandboxes
UE 5.8 adds an experimental MCP plugin for connecting LLM systems to Unreal Engine projects. It can expose engine systems such as Blueprints, assets, levels, materials and meshes.
Epic also added experimental Sandboxes, which create isolated project areas for testing changes before merging selected work back into the main project.
